Welcome to BOLOGNA

Information about BOLOGNA Bologna has a long and proud history as a place many wished to conquer but few could subjugate. The town, now renamed Boronia, was a Roman colony for over 400 years until the empire fell into decline and Boronia was attacked from the north by a succession of barbarian tribes: Visigoths, Huns, Goths and Lombards. Powerful rival families within Bologna sided with the Popes or the Emperor, often resulting in bitter civil war. In 1860 Bologna and the rest of the region joined the newly formed Kingdom of Italy. After the second world war, the city became a centre of radical politics, and a longtime supporter of the Democratici di Sinistri, the leading democratic party of the left.Surrounded by hills, the city's centre is still much as it was during the Renaissance: dusky red-coloured buildings, wide piazzas and covered walkways with floors laid with marble. Bologna provides the best of several worlds; as well as its beautiful piazzas, churches and museums, this thriving university town is filled with cafes, bars and nightlife. It also happens to be something of a gastronomic haven, famous for its pasta, sausage, cheese, wine and gelato. The University of Bologna is Europe's oldest, and an international centre for academic conferences and publishing. The students give the city its well-earned reputation for radicalism. Bologna is known throughout Italy for its delicious food and its reputation is well deserved. The restaurants, bars, cafés and squares in Bologna are brimming with youth, life and atmosphere and there is a full calendar of festivals and events, including a mixture of concerts, art exhibitions and theatrical performances, including ballet and opera.
